Pauline Walle has been writing free verse at least since the 1980s, but it wasn't until she opened a drawer in her study one day and went through her growing collection of poems that the idea of a book occurred to her. It may come as a surprise to some and a delight to others, but Cobourg is developing a reputation across Canada as a hot zone for poetry. According to Cobourg resident James Pickersgill, the impresario who is bringing the Poetry'zOwn Weekend (POW!) poetry festival to Cobourg (April 15 to April 18) for the second year, "it's the best kept secret... kept from people in Cobourg, but people outside know it." In the world of poetry, its not necessary to have long lineups to be successful.

Alexander Barnes' voice rises and falls among the squeals of children at play at the Lithia Park playground. The poem is "Domestic Violence" by Eavan Boland and is one on three Barnes recited during a performance Saturday at the statewide Poetry Out Loud competition in Salem which earned him second place. The impromptu performance amid the playground din was delivered with confidence and subtle flair, a reflection of Barnes' recital in Salem where much more was on the line.  

Though popular culture depicts teenagers as interested in only their own worlds, Wilton Library's fourth annual Poetry in Motion performance event powerfully dispels that myth in the two-night event on Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. "In A World Without Limits" is the theme for this year's poetry initiative in which kids in grades 7 through 12 created their own original poetry. Two Coastal Carolina Community College English instructors have earned awards in this year's North Carolina Poetry Society Contests. Andrea Bates' poem "Cinnamon," won first place in the Thomas H. McDill Adult Poet category. Deborah Doolittle's poem "Gertrude Stein Counts Three Bachelor Buttons," won first place in the category of Poetry of Love, and her poem "My Grandmother's Boston Rocker" won honorable mention in the Poetry of Courage category.
